Camp Hwange

Camp Hwange is one of the newest camps to be built in the Sinamatella region of the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The construction of Camp Hwange, using local materials, skills and labour wherever possible, is the culmination of a dream. Our vision is a camp that rekindles the spirit of adventure of a bygone era, and capturing the excitement of an authentic safari in Africa.

Ideally situated in a private concession inside the Hwange National Park, just 3 hours by road from Victoria Falls, Camp Hwange, the newest safari camp to be built in Hwange, consists of 8 comfortable chalet-tents. We offer the chance to have a unique experience with excellent safaris both by vehicle or on foot, plus the chance to do night drives. The guides, arguably considered to be amongst the best in Africa, known for their love of nature and the wide open spaces, offer you a chance to discover the world where you are a part of the mosiac of life.

Camp Hwange sits in a secluded area of Hwange National Park set on a rise overlooking a water-hole which is pumped year round. The main area is set under a large thatch roof with supporting timber pillars opening the whole building up to 180° vistas. This large and open area plays host to the dining area which consists of a large dining table and a side table where food is served in hot plates in the evening and tea and coffee along with cereals, yoghurts and fruit are on offer in the morning. There are also a couple of seating areas found in the main area too, very comfortable settees and chairs surround a coffee table - perfect for relaxing in while waiting to see what comes down to drink from the water-hole. For those looking for refreshment there’s also a small but well-stocked bar.

Room Types & description

Accommodation at Camp Hwange comes in the form of 8 canvas walled chalets with thatched roofs all overlooking the water-hole. Gauze windows allow a breeze to blow through but keep the insects out while a free standing fan in each tent also helps to keep the air circulating.

Chalets, Double Rooms

The Chalets and Tents have their own large surrounding area at ground level with a complete vista of the waterhole.

All of the chalets at Camp Hwange have:

  • en-suite bathrooms.
  • flush toilets and solar heated showers and cold running water
  • bathrooms are simple but provide everything you’ll require during your stay.
  • a paraffin storm-lantern is provided in each tent to provide a little extra light too.
  • an electronic safe for securing away valuables in each tent.

The main lodge

The main lodge is made up of a big lounge and a beautiful restaurant where you will savour delicious dinners. The decoration is sober and has been handled with taste, in an African atmosphere. In the middle of bushes, the camp is on the same level everywhere and will you have a dizzying sensation of uniting with nature. One of this camp’s particularities also concerns its ecological commitment. Indeed the electricity which is produced comes from solar energy. Camp Hwange’s intimacy and comfort are very much appreciated and the best service is absolutely guaranteed.

Things to do at Camp Hwange

Camp Hwange reverts back to the concept the original safari, where activities centred on being immersed in the wild, walking being the main activity.

Game Drive

Mid afternoon we will gather at the main area again to discuss the afternoon’s activity. The chosen excursion can mean that we will return to camp after dark. We have the concession from the National Parks to organise night drives which allows us to explore and view the nocturnal species that inhabit the area. Mid afternoon we will gather at the main area again to discuss the afternoon’s activity.

 Log Pile Hide

We do have a unique log pile hide in the shade near the waterhole which your guide will be happy to take you - so that you may have a close up view of all the visitors needing to drink and carry out their ablutions. The wood pile in front of camp is a great place to spend a couple of hours in the early morning or late afternoon too, sitting patiently waiting to see what comes down to drink from the water-hole.

Walking Safari

We are able to conduct these activities on our private concession and also in the park as a whole. Walks are especially exciting and our guides pride themselves on their knowledge of the big and small things that make up the environment. During walks with well trained and experienced guides you will track and follow some of the most feared animals of Africa, secure in the knowledge that your guides and trackers are competent in all aspects of this exciting adventure.

Camp Hwange Wildlife

Hwange’s mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in our area includes lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyaena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebra and eland are found in abundance on the open plains, while in winter elephant congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes. Birdlife in the area is prolific (400+) and varied.
