Little Makalolo Camp lies in the Hwange National Park’s 1.4 million hectares, which support a mix of habitats, a diverse area that is shared between desert-adapted and woodland species, ensuring large numbers of animals all year round – elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and even gemsbok.

Little Makalolo Camp lies in the heart of Hwange National Park, in one of its best game viewing areas, overlooking a vibrant waterhole. The camp's six rooms have en-suite facilities, with both indoor and outdoor showers. Solar power is used for electricity ensuring a lighter environmental footprint. The living areas include a dining room, lounge, plunge pool and an open fire area for those convivial evening fireside tales. There is a log pile hide overlooking the waterhole in front of camp where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing during the siesta hours. It offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The area is ecologically diverse, ensuring great numbers of animals year-round.

 Room Types

The camp’s six spacious en-suite tents, with both indoor and outdoor showers, are nestled in the tree line, with solar power for hot water and lighting ensuring a lighter ecological footprint.

Tented Suites

There are five standard tents which are made up of four twin bedded tents and one double bedded tent, and one family tent which comprises of two adjoining rooms. Each of the six canvas and wood chalets features a day bed, a writing desk with a view and a small shaded veranda. The en suite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers, and one of the suites even has a big outdoor tub for starlit baths.

 

 

 

Facilities

There is a refreshing swimming pool in the camp to cool off in between safari activities. The dining room and lounge at Little Makalolo are all built under canvas and overlook the teeming waterhole, making game viewing both easy and comfortable.

Dining

Wake up to a light and delicious breakfast before embarking on an early morning game drive. A hearty lunch follows your return to camp, followed in turn by an indulgent afternoon tea, served before your afternoon safari activity.

Dinner is enjoyed around a large table in the tented dining room overlooking the waterhole or out under the stars.

 

 

Things to do at Little Makalolo Camp

Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest and most popular national park; our private concession means that sightings of the prolific wildlife are exclusive and private.Makalolo is one of the best areas for seeing impressive herds of buffalo and elephant as well as apex predators such as lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah. Other general game is very abundant in the Park.

Game drives in open Land Rovers

Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe at 14 651 km² with varied habitats and vegetation types – meaning that game drives are exciting with always something new to be seen. (Wind-resistant ponchos are provided during winter months.)Activities at Little Makalolo Camp centre on open 4x4 Land Rover game drives and guided nature walks throughout the Makalolo concession. The area's large number of waterholes attracts game in both quantity and variety, especially in the winter months when Hwange is literally home to a Noah's Ark parade of animals as they come down to quench their thirst.
 

Morning walking safaris 

Hwange was proclaimed some 80 years ago and has served as a haven for one of the densest concentrations of game in Africa. There is no better way to experience this park than on foot with an experienced safari guide.Bird life in the area is prolific (400+) and varied, with species frequenting teak woodlands as well as those more typical of the drier Kalahari being present.

 

 

Evening drives with spotlight  

The Hwange ‘night-act’ includes species such as lesser bushbaby, spotted hyaena, leopard, lion, Selous mongoose, pangolin, caracal, porcupine, scrub hare, springhare and even honey badger.

 

 

 

 

Wildlife at Little Makalolo Camp

Hwange’s mix of different veld and landscape types means that game viewing is productive year-round. Wildlife frequently encountered in our area includes lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, leopard, spotted hyaena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala, waterbuck and reedbuck. In summer, wildebeest, zebra and eland are found in abundance on the open plains, while in winter elephant congregate in enormous numbers around the waterholes.

Birdlife in the area is prolific (400+) and varied.

Little Makalolo Camp Rates

Our fully inclusive rates are not just about the level of accommodation or the thread count of the linen. They encompass elements that cannot be counted or measured, such as exclusive access to more than 3 million hectares (8 million acres) of Africa’s best wildlife areas. This equates to 3 000 hectares (8 000 acres) of private land per guest, creating a unique sense of seclusion, comfort, privacy and space. In turn, your presence helps us in the conservation of these areas.
