A Colosseum-style building in Centenary Park houses an interesting ornithological collection. This is known as the National Museum which also has displays of Southern African wildlife and memorabilia of Cecil John Rhodes, founder of the country he called Rhodesia. This name remained for decades in the 20th century, until 1980 when the country became independent of Britain and was renamed Zimbabwe.
Displays of mammals in the National Museum include a mounted elephant, standing at over 3 metres tall at the shoulder and weighing well over 5 tons.
